SEAMOR Marine Ltd. was proud to provide a custom ROV to CERMIM – Centre de recherche sur les milieux insulaires et maritimes, who removed 73 football fields’ worth of rope and 50 ‘ghost’ crab traps in Canada’s largest ghost gear recovery operation.

Often dubbed “ghost fishing gear”, fishing equipment like these traps are one of the deadliest forms of marine plastics, not only degrading into micro plastics but trapping and entangling wildlife.

After refining their retrieval method using the SEAMOR ROV, the operators achieved a remarkable crab trap recovery time of only 6 minutes—diving up to 300ft!
